Economy
The economic development of Mobile Alabama is thriving because of the diversity of the city’s available industries. Mobile has easy access to railroads, Ocean-feeding shipyards and available labor, making it the prime location for manufacturing and industry.
Mobile is home to more than 500 unique manufacturers that choose to operate within the Mobile Industrial Base. A few of the major industries providing labor and products from Mobile are: shipbuilding, lumber products, paper textiles and computer equipment.
The economy of Mobile received its greatest boost forward when the Tennessee Tombigee Water Way was complete. With the new easy-access waterway into and out of the town, large product-carrying barges were able to maneuver in and out of the major seaport.
Oil and gas production are also major industries in Mobile, giving the economy a consistent stream of revenue and labor. Drilling rigs are placed both inland and offshore, employing hundreds of workers from Mobile and surrounding counties.
Furthermore, Mobile is the ideal climate for crop production; it hosts mild and sunny springs that are tempered by warm summers with ample rainfall. Some of the major crops grown in the greater Mobile region include: potatoes, pecans and soybeans. These crops are then processed and shipped by railway freight across the US and overseas quickly by way of the available ocean-faring barges.
